Day 8

San Diego

First time I’ve ever played music on a boat. The triple A radio station in San Diego sponsored an event on this huge yacht and we played it. Big crowd too- a few hundred people. The view was amazing from my drum set; a gorgeous San Diego sparkling and shining proudly on the shore as the yacht cruised around the San Diego Bay.

After the boat, why not another trip to Turk Supper Club? The previous night I did not realize that Turf has such a righteous jukebox. Steak two nights in a row might sound crazy, but sometimes you just gotta do it dammit.

Day 9

San Diego to Tucson AZ

After saying goodbye to my San Diego friends, we made the long and boring drive through the dessert country to Tucson, Arizona. It was cool to see the huge fence on the borderline of America and Mexico. And too look of into that land. It made me think about Cormac McCarthy’s border trilogy. The foreign land that is so dangerous, yet captivating, compelling. A land for lonesome adventure. Where love violence may strike at will and at a lightening pace.

Day 10

Tucson AZ to Phoenix AZ

The show last night in Tucson was not that great. Kind of ho-hum. I thought we did great, the crowd seemed sort of languid and although we tried our damnedest, we could not seem to galvanize them.

But a short drive to Pheonix was nice. Where I saw smoke rising on the Mexican horizon. Which of course got my curiosity jogging. It was a beautiful site, ominous as it seemed.

Day 11

Barely Home

Pheonix AZ to Nashville TN

Early flight from Pheonix back to the old hometown. Lunch with friends, time with the dogs, a show at Live On the Green, drinking with friends at the old neighborhood bar. The show was a big deal. There was a big video screen set up, and from where I was positioned back on the drums, I could catch some glimpses of it. That was the first time I had ever been on a screen, so it was extra special to me that that happened in my hometown. In the words of Kendrick Lamar “you can see that my city found me then put me on stages. To me, that’s amazing”

As special as the night was , it was also very strange and sentimental to me in a way. Being in Nashville but still being on tour. I was at my home where I really do not have a home. Then again, everywhere I go is my home. My home is out here and on this stage. So because I was in Nashville on your I was doubly at home? Yet less at home because I could not stay there? I don’t know. It doesn’t need an explanation or answer.

To live somewhere but not to live there but to live everywhere.
